1. How to reach perfection

      written by Ray Benefield
Alright so I wanted to write up a nice formal advertisement style first post to draw you in, but I changed my mind. I'm going to tell you what's up with this site in my own words and style. Welcome to Reaching Perfection! It is here that I want to blow your mind with how much complexity there is in the world of designing games. And not just video games like Halo or Call of Duty either. What about things like Risk? Or maybe Monopoly? How 'bout the intricacies of Tag versus Hide and Seek? How 'bout the deal behind those ridiculous little stuffed animal cranes that you find in arcades and Walmart? I'm not an expert, but I've discovered a lot myself and I want to introduce you to this world that I find myself exploring day after day, minute to minute. Would you like to join me and learn with me? Or are you just going to continue playing your latest game "addiction" and not know why you keep coming back for more?

      The Why

So what brought me to wanting to write this blog? Take a second to think about how much games have become an integral part of our society. From playing Plants vs Zombies on the iPhone, to playing Farmville on Facebook, to pwning n00bs on Halo 3, to raiding with your guild in World of Warcraft, games have buried themselves deep into the lives of kids, teens, adults, parents, co-workers, and many many more. This intrigued me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So I took the time to take a look into the why and how of these games. I want to share with the general public what I've found and have you, the reader, express your feelings on various subjects and share what you have experienced.

      The What

Game design and development is a massive topic. But I want to provide the lot of you with information that you will be interested. Maybe some inside info on why there is this massive fascination with facebook games like Farmville, Restaurant City, Treasure Madness, Mafia Wars, etc. I'm sure most of you gamers or friends/family of gamers have heard of World of Warcraft. Have you heard them state that they hate playing it? So why do they continue to play it?

But see that's on quite a broad scope. I'll also delve into deeper topics like the decisions designers make when they choose to put a sniper at the bottom of the level and a shotgun in the hallway. A shout out to the level designers out there, the lot of you will love this blog cuz I'll be covering a ton of level design philosophies. Also designers keep in mind that those addiction topics can be useful for you as well. It could possibly spark an idea on how to make people want to play your game or level even more. Regardless if you have any sort of association with games, I can guarantee that you will find some sort of new information in the lifetime of this blog.

      The Who

All of these great things will be provided by myself, Raymond Benefield. Some of you know me as AZN FTW, Jihad, GodlyPerfection, or just Ray. I'm a game designer at heart, and currently a computer programmer in the US Air Force in practice. Want to know more about me?
