1. Conquest in Reach Matchmaking

      Alright so I said I was going to do a bunch of sketchup stuff today, but I think most of you know what you are doing for now with sketchup. If you really want me to cover some tips and tricks I can, but otherwise all I'm going to do is just show you these awesome sketchup components that MickRaider and Bartoge made of a majority of the objects in Forge World. Just click the picture below and it will bring you to the download spot. Anyways, today I want to talk to you about us working together to get Conquest into matchmaking in Halo: Reach.




      Best chance to make it


      Alright so yesterday during a custom game night with The Guardianz, Time Glitch was talking to the rest of us about getting Conquest into matchmaking and he made a great point. He may not enjoy Conquest, but he fully supports getting it into matchmaking as it has the best chance of getting in and will open the door for all other custom gametypes due to it's popularity. So whether or not you enjoy playing Conquest, I think it is crucial for all of us to work together to get Conquest into matchmaking. Most of you cannot deny the huge impact it has had on Halo 3 forgers and custom game players. Furious D 18 said it best when he nominated it for Best Gametype in Best of Forge at Forgehub:

      I think this one is a no-brainer. Conquest by AZN FTW [EDITOR: Now GodlyPerfection... ;)] should win this category. It did for Halo 3 what Zombies and Power Tower did for Halo 2... only times a hundred.

      It inspired literally dozens of map variants and a handful of gametype spin-offs. There have been contests devoted to this gametype alone. Most people I know who do a lot of Forging have at some point made a Conquest map.

      No gametype in the history of Halo 3 inspired so much creativity from the Forging community, especially here at Forge Hub.


      I NEED YOU!


      So I cannot do this by myself and I am asking and begging for your help. I need your help to build a map archive of quality Conquest maps for submission into matchmaking for Halo: Reach. I need your creativity, your crazy good aesthetic abilities, and your assistance in building a massive archive of Conquest maps that could eventually get into matchmaking for everyone to enjoy. If you want to help out and possibly even see your map in matchmaking, I need you to comment on this post with your gamertag stating that you either want to build a map for the archive or help test and prepare maps for the archive or both. I will be hunting down as many people as I possibly can to make this happen and I will be working closely with everyone to polish not just the maps, but a solid final version of Conquest as soon as Reach comes out. Please take the time to share this with your friends who have played or forged Conquest maps. This task isn't going to be easy.       I'm all for both. I just played it with a large group for the first time yesterday, and it was ridiculously fun. I'll playtest it just so I can play it more :) And I'll try my hand at building a map for it, not sure how good it will be though. I'll read your guide.

      When I get the time in Reach, I'd love to work on one just for the challenge. Some of my projects are going to come first, but I'll get around to studying and learning so I can make one that doesn't totally suck the nuts XD

We can get some custom games playing some of the other Conquest maps if you guys want to get a better feel for Conquest in H3 to help transition to Reach.

      You know that I'll forge conquest maps Godly. I think this has a better chance than it did in Halo 3, because frankly, that party started too late. I mean, Halo had little time left and Gunnergrunt sent Bungie the message. I think that now we have the concept and we can plan even before Reach comes out, we can have a better chance to get Bungie's attention before its too late.

      Also, I think we should remake some of Halo 3's conquest map within the first week, so that way there isn't any down time while people are coming up with ideas for the transformed line that makes up Conquest maps.

      And bartoge that is definitely what I was thinking of. Re-building things like The Cellars, Gold Rush, Propulsion, Of the Essence, and other influential H3 conquest maps. I plan on trying to contact most of those who have built Conquest maps in the past and heading them this way and request that they remake their map in Reach. But I am unable to contact the majority of the population at Forgehub. Would you be so kind in to trying to get a hold of them personally and referring them back here? I will try to get a hold of everyone I can at other sites. All you really need to do is go to Forgehub and search for Conquest and PM/VM the authors. If you could do that we can really get this ball rolling.

      I will sign up for both, Map testing and Map buiding. You just will need to help me with spawns and weapons until I get a hang of it because those are the main problems I struggle with. I personally think this NEEDS to get into matchmaking to inspire the community and I think this gametype will inspire even more imagination when reach comes out...

      I will build at least one Conquest map by the time DN'10 rolls around, and I will debut it at that event since I won't be able to directly participate in Camp Custom. :P

      Also, would it be okay with you if I made a Conquest Forging Challenge part of December's Camp Custom event?

      Godly you can count on me to help you test maps on DAY 1 and soon after build maps in reach as well. I have never been a forger but with your lessons, I soon will be, Stinger out.

      And glad you are inspired to build a map DJ. I will definitely take the time to work with you and get you in on the Conquest madness bro.

      As for you Debo, a lot of that was like a foreign language to me. What is DN'10 and Camp Custom? Is camp custom like a huge event that includes forging challenges? Anyways, you have full right to start up a Conquest forging challenge for whatever you want bro. Go for it. I added you to the Map Designers list. Not sure if you will get the chance to playtest with us or not. If you want to be on the playtest list too, just let me know.

      Awesome stinger I will do my best to help you get in on the whole forger scene. And you are definitely down for testing my friend. Shall I add you to the list of map designers? Or do you just want to wait it out until you get a better hang of things? I think Conquest would be a great way for you to slowly get into level design and practice your techniques as the maps are quite simplified.

      Definitely drawing connections where none exist. You should read the conquest description that I posted for the map designers to read so that way you understand what it is better. As far as doing the maps don't worry about it bro. However I do actually think that you should build a Conquest map as one of the first maps you build. It will definitely help you work with your smooth spawning, eye catching and other techniques. It is a simplified layout compared to regular maps and makes it easy to learn some of the lessons. Conquest maps are just a linear path with 5-7 territories in it.

      Reading the description is what reminded me of Battlefield's gametype of the same name, capturing and defending territories while continuing to push toward the enemies base, Battlefield's conquest is just not as linear as yours, so the similarities are there, you just might not have intended them. Showing similarities to such a successful franchise isn't a bad thing either.

      DN'10 is an annual tradition of mine where I hype things for a few months and then have a massive custom game night event where a select few new maps made by me and other close friends of mine are revealed. That's how Felipe dos and I actually first revealed 8 Emerald Legs, and it's also when I revealed Hoverdangle for the first time. Haha. I make sure to have one or two "big" things in the reveal lineup, and this year will be no different. Expect cool stuff - probably a "standard" map from me, as well as a Conquest one. And God only knows what awesome monster Felipe will make by then. DN'10 will be held in the last week of December 2010, between Christmas and New Year's. Once I have reach in my hot little hands, I'll start the hype train a'rollin. Haha. I'm so lame.

      As for Camp Custom, that's going to be TCE's premier annual event. Signups will be in November, and the event will last for most of December. Users of the site will be divided up into "lodges" based on their styles of play and preferred custom content types, and people from each custom content discipline will be present in each Lodge. Then a list of custom content-related challenges (some involving one discipline, others involving interdisciplinary cooperation) will be released, and each Lodge will have to complete a set number of the challenges. The Lodge that performs best overall will win some sweet prizes for their efforts, but individual challenge winners will also be rewarded.

      I will add you to the list Legolum. But I'm on at random times. When we are on at the same time we can get a game setup and I can teach you the intricacies of a Conquest map. I am in the Pacific Time Zone. I have an extension to my chrome browser that will tell me when you get online tomorrow so if I can jump on I will.

      Just read some more guides and actually looked closely at them, apparently I did alot wrong, territory placement is a big one. I need to figure out how I'm going to cover every sq. foot of the map when their are so many curves... Must be why Ghost town has never/barely been used for conquest... I hope I can fix whats broken. (:

      Actually stinger, It might work. with team spawning on like it is, it might take a whole minute to reach the enemy for the first time, but you will be meeting in one place like any other conquest map...

      The only hard part is keeping the game moving, which wouldnt work out because people would be waiting for teammates all the time & holding off while they wait. It would require big teams to move smoothly, but you should be able to make a strait line & make use of cover.

      And Stinger/Syrup as legolum mentioned the main problem is walking time. Conquest maps need to be small enough so your team doesn't have to wait forever for backup. Obviously the smaller maps are best for small teams and the bigger maps are best for big teams, but there is a limit to reduce walking time.

      And legolum good luck with your territory placement that is the main problem that most maps have. The reason for it is so that if you take cover or are trying to move around the designated territory/room you should still be contesting it as you are trying to defend that piece of land. You get what I'm saying bro?

      syrupey, Thats what I had in mind. it would have to be one of those conquest modificationmagigas in the big book of conquest, we would have to make sure none of the cars/weapons can 1hitkill, so lower damage and up shields/hp ALOT. It would work out. then we have to deal with not having many cars, warthogs and mongooses at spawns, ghosts/tiny wraith thing in center (: would be fun to experiment with.

      There is one big problem with this though. Part of the essence of Conquest is not being able to go past the other team to disallow flanking. As a vehicle it is really easy to just fly past the other team. Also it is difficult to support the taking cover concept in a vehicle to recharge shields. We've tried vehicle conquest several times. The closest anyone has gotten is Coyote's rush variant. Even then it doesn't have the essence of Conquest in mind. But feel free to try something along those lines but try to come up with a new "essence" to help you make your decisions about your gametype.

      I just don't see myself making any maps for anything other than my minigames right now. Unless it's Agents, which will never get into Matchmaking (that is, unless Time Glitch implements his plan to take over the world through mind-controlling gerbils).

      I would be down to playtest and design maps. Bungie has stated that they will be adding community maps to matchmaking, and if we create maps good enough we could easily get conquest into matchmaking.
