1. Inception

Inception is a casual map based on the concept of "closed loops". It is made to give the illusion of a massive map in a small space. Sometimes it seems that the map ends, but when you turn the corner the map keeps going. 16 players fit easily on the map. It works best for FFA gametypes that do not require weapons on map such as SWAT, infection, and swords. Read on for a video of gameplay and the download link.

      Inception: The Movie

For those that have not seen the movie Inception yet, I highly recommend it for all aspiring level designers. It is a level designer's movie. It talks about concepts like creating a believable world and how they trick people into believing that what they are experiencing is real life. Honestly my favorite part of the movie is Ellen Page. ;) On a serious note though I highly suggest you guys take a look at it.

      Closed Loops

In the movie, the concept of a "closed loop" is discussed. Basically it is something that gives the impression of always progressing forward but keeping the person confined to a definitive space. A good example of this is the concept of the endless staircase... a very popular painting topic of the artist MC Escher. Inception creates this concept by creating ramps that are really long and end at a certain point making the map appear to end with it. However when you jump down to another ramp and go around the corner you will discover a ramp that goes even farther up or down than that last ramp, making players feel like the map is always extending past it. With the way the map is built, it fits 16 players rather well.

      Gametypes

Inception works for a variety of gametypes that do not require weapons on map or a special map layout. SWAT works extremely well for this map, as does infection, swords, and other simplified gametypes. It is highly recommended that you set a jump height of 120% if you want players to be able to jump up to a new level. Below you will find a sample video of gameplay. I hope you enjoy this fun map. It isn't anything serious and was just a cool idea that I through together in 2 hours. Share it with your friends, tag it with ReachingPerfection, and post it on other communities with my full permission. Enjoy!

I'll make sure to have the others done soon so they can get put up too. Just to clarify, it's just the Hexagon and the flipped ramps that I'm gonna do.

Oh yes. Inception is quite a bit of fun. It's practically your new Minotaur if I say so myself. I mean, it's even made for SWAT!

You really should set it up for other gametypes like KotH, Oddball, and Headhunter. They would give it so much more potential.

And by the way, you misspelled threw in your Gametypes paragraph. "It isn't anything serious and was just a cool idea that I through together in 2 hours."

Random thought, sort of, but I've been going over some musings of mine on Gestalt theory, so I decided to apply it to map design; when I have time to take it out of the bulleted list format, I'll send you the copy.

I still feel as if it's a bit too tempting to camp at the (seemingly) top of the map. There are too many places where you can put your back to a wall, put walls on either side of you, and then have a great view of tons of paths. It's not that big an issue, but if you end up playing with a bunch of campers, it gets a bit annoying if you're actually traversing the map.

It's still a really fun game though. And I do need to see Inception...

I agree with BadCompany on his observation. In playtesting, there were two kinds of people:

      1. The hunters, who would circle around on one level of the map.

      2. The campers, who would put their backs to a wall and hit the hunters as they passed.

Often, campers would be hunters while searching for the top or bottom levels. Because of the SWAT nature and the looping nature of the map, though, there is enough danger to camping, besides the incentive of hunting for kills.

      And wait, Godly designed Minotaur?

There are many different ways that could be remedied, if G-Perf feels it to be an issue, he'll fix it.

It is meant to be a casual map for casual fun. In SWAT it isn't really that big of a deal as the campers end up getting less kills as the roamers. If I find an easier way to fix it then I will go back and do it. But right now I just wanted to get it out there... lol. I'll let you guys know if I update it.

Lesson 18- Patience ;) dont rush to get a map out if it isnt done

      GodlyPerfection said...

But it is done you see. There is also the tidbit about not being afraid to goback and improve a map. If you are always waiting to make it the best you can make it, then you will never release it. Being patient isn't about improving it... just about finishing :P.

Do you remember how we got here? This is our first lesson in shared forging. Welcome to Inception. Congrats on the release.

HEY!!! Ascendant Nightmare is "done" and in my file share. If you get a chance, test it with Inception Swat (you might need to bump up jumps to 150). I also suggest low low gravity to make it super surreal. The version for Flatline should be ready soon, then Hexception will be ready too. Also, I got that arena Invasion game done and the Castle Map (Working on Name) will have spawns and objectives placed, major play test time!

Sounds good I will try to remember to download it when I get online. Remind me if I don't... lol. :P Looking forward to the Hexagon one. And I'll add them to the post for people to find those as well.

Very good, most confusing map since halo 3's distorsion.

I like how you proved that your such a clever designer, you made an excellent map disregarding lesson 37 :D

Hey very cool map Godly. This is actually what got me to read your lessons. I figured if I was going to be taking advice from you I might as well see what you can do.
