1. Resurrecting Perfection

      written by Ray Benefield
I know you're mad bro. You don't have to tell me that. I've been very lazy in writing a post. I've known what to write for a forge lesson for a while, but just haven't pulled myself together to get to writing it. I also went into a matchmaking frenzy for a little bit and I've been spending LOADS more time with Manda. I haven't forgot about you guys. I've still been watching, I just haven't been doing anything for a bit. This site has hit a few times when it just "dies" for a few weeks. I want to try to avoid this situation all together from now on. Since I'm about to be a father I'm going to need more than just myself to keep this site alive. Obviously I'm going to need yours too.

      A post a day perhaps?

Alright so I've been able to pull this off before, but it slowed down because I got too "perfectionist" with my posts. I have to remind myself that this is a blog, not an official information site or anything. So I'm going to try to get into the habit of posting every single day. Some days it will relate to forging, some days it will relate to game design, some days it will be about things that I'm interested in that you should check out, and other days I may just rant about something, who knows. Basically my goal is to get into the habit of writing often. I have plans to one day work for Bungie, and one of those ways could be through being a community content writer. So if I want the job, I've got to practice for it. RP will be my test bed. Sure sometimes you won't see something that you like, well that's fine just don't read it. I just want to make sure that you have a reason to atleast keep checking the site everyday.

      Additional Authors

Now on top of me trying to post everyday, we know that there will be times where you guys want to hear from someone else. I've contacted a few people about writing for RP. Basically they would type something up, save it in draft and I would look over it and decide whether or not to post it. One of these said authors will be in charge of RP favorites and finding fun content for everyone to play on a weekly basis or so. Each can write about level design, game design, community philosophy, advertising techniques, whatever. If I read it over and I think it will be an interesting read then I will post it up. Posts by additional authors will be scarce at first, but as time goes on they will start to take the reigns more and more often in hopes that the site will gain more sustainability when I decide to get busy or distracted. lol...

      Events or something

Contests, custom nights, challenges, etc. Who knows. People like events. People like events with prizes. With a baby on the way, I cannot afford prizes. But who knows, if I stumble across a 1600 MS points card or 3 months of live I will run something. Donations and what not could go a long way in getting this site to livin' up a bit. People like earning stuff and since we are a small crowd right now you would have a good chance in winning. It may not even be Halo related, I may just want to run an interesting contest. I actually just thought of an interesting one about super powers lol. Anyways, maybe forge contests down the road or something. Who knows. Maybe this idea will die. lol...

      Last, but not least

So speaking of donations and what not, I wanted to find a way to try to raise money for the site to by little rewards like this. Companies pay for advertisements around sites all the time. So why can't forgers/artists pay to get some exposure? I have been looking into adding advertisements to the site but they never seem to fit our needs, so what if I run a sort of specialized advertisement setup. There would be two little spaces or so where you would see adds for creations. These ads would randomly cycle through a list of about 10 advertisements. Anyone would be able to pay for advertisements to go up. It could be a pay for a week kind of thing with obvious limits on how often you can do it, or what not. These ads would in no way represent the site, but it would be our way to raise money for rewards and stuff while simultaneously giving people a chance to expose their map or gametype or whatever to the readers. Our own little personalized ad revenue system. This too may just die in a fire as an idea, but who knows. What are your thoughts?

I think we definitely need at least an official customs night, if not some sort of contest. And if I ever come across extra MS points or something, I'll consider donating it.

I think that type of advertising is very innovative, but I think that the only advertisements that you'll get would be outside the context of halo's forge. I don't know for sure if investing in commercial advertising for those maps would catch on, but that's just my own naive opinion.

I think that advertising could work, but then again, it might not. Simply enough, site revival=yay.

More stuff in general is always good. I think that a more casual basis would be awesome, where perfect posts are not required.

A suggestion for reorganising the front page: As Forge Lessons are RP's main attraction, instead of just having the latest blog posts, is it possible to have the latest blog posts, and a separate list saying the latest two or three forge lesson. I know that the Forge Lesson tab exists, but this would help in an immediate "Oh, I know where I want to go" feeling.

^ what noklu said bout the site revival.
Adverting. Intriguing. I could only image the number of hits on a page whenever a forge lesson is posted on bnet. Also people are more likely to click then on say forgehub where it is completely unrelated as the site has a reputaion for excellence and therefore people would think it would almost be like a "godly picked these ones so they must be good."

Hey Godly I had an essay in my portfolio that I would like for you to look over ;) and right now I am in the middle of contacting a person who has a working xbox that is missing a CD drive, but since my drive is still good I am going to try and trade some games for it.....

sweetness. I really liked the idea about the local advertisement. It was kinda like really cool birthday present to find that you had broght the site back :). Thanks Godly

@ Nik, I don't think you understand how the advertising system would work. There would be two boxes with pictures. You would be able to submit an image and a link for say one week for like a dollar or two. For that one week your image and link would randomly rotate through those two boxes along with other map ads on the site so your map gets the exposure that you want. Of course exposure is based on how popular the site is, and with the forge lessons exposure is quite high. It wouldn't be commercial advertising, it would all be controlled in house.

@the rest of you, I'm glad you like the idea of ads, I still have to setup the system and give it a test run, but it would be a great way for me to raise funds to reward those that visit the site regularly.

That's what I was thinking you meant Godly. I didn't comment earlier because I wasn't all that into paying to advertise my stuff, but hearing you say it'd only be a buck or two really swayed my level of interest. Would there be a cap to the number of images cycled through each week? If there would be, and it was low so images would get higher exposure, I would definitely take advantage of the service at least once.

I agree with Kirov, you're constantly running customs, but they're never truly RP related. Maybe if when people click over to here from b.net's home page, in the opening paragraph there's something about fun and games, they'd be more inclined to get involved with the community, especially once they find out what (*sweeps hairs*) awesome guys we are.

So would the advertising space be something like $5 for week of space or something along those lines?

      GodlyPerfection said...

@Mythic yes there would be a cap to the number of images per week. Say there would be two spots and maybe a max of 10-20 images per week would cycle through those two spots. That way each week you would only see a few maps and every sunday I would rotate everything for the next week. So when you order advertising you pay a dollar or two the week before you want it up as long as the space is still available. This would also create a supply and demand scenario for advertising.

@Brik I completely agree that if we were to advertise that there are fun and games to be had at RP then a lot more people would want to be part of the community. I plan on advertising that soon, but let us get back into the groov of things, shall we?

@Stinker As I told Mythic the advertising space would actually be less then that. More like 1-3 dollars a week. Depending of course. I don't want to rob you of your money, I just want to raise enough to allow us to host contests with rewards often and raise activity.
