1. Site Plans

      written by Ray Benefield
So I'm slowly starting to re-integrate myself back into online mode. Meaning that I am spending more and more time on the computer so I am looking at making some improvements to what we have here at RP right now. Also meaning that advertising is going to go back into full motion again like I did when we started getting the forge lessons popular. I'm starting to delegate here and there so I can put more focus on other things to improve the site. Slow and steady folks...

      A closer look into Advertisements

Alright so I spent most of the morning doing more research on setting up advertisements. More specifically I spent time researching how to setup the rotating ads with javascript and I also spent a ton of time researching setting up an online store. I am most likely setting up everything through paypal so if you plan on buying advertisement space for your maps, gametypes, communities, etc. then get yourself setup with paypal early. Right now I am looking to sticking to the $1 price tag. From my research the fee to do transactions through paypal for microtransactions ($10 or less) is 5% plus five cents. So for every ad slot sold we will make 90 cents. In order to purchase a 1600 microsoft point card or 3 month XBL membership it will take about 25 slots to be sold. As for slots per week what I was thinking is basing it off of the pageviews per week. When I put new slots up for sale I will offer 2 slots (one for each image slot on the webpage seeing as I am showing two at a time) per thousand pageviews. So right now we are at 4K+ meaning that there will be 8 slots available if I were to put the new slots for next week up now. So since I am looking to show two at a time, I need to find a place in the layout to show them on the site. Speaking of layout

      Potential Layout Changes

So since I need to find a place to put the two advertisement slots I was thinking about actually looking at a new style for the site. The new HTML5/CSS3 stuff has really caught my eye to give the site a more modern feel. So if I come across something I will show you guys first and get your opinion. The color scheme that we have now though is definitely something I like. The combination of black/green/blue makes for a very techy looking site and I like it. The site does feel kinda of blocky and lame though style wise so I want to look into something stylish for sure. Who knows what I will find out there. Speaking of HTML5/CSS3 one of the possibilities is changing to a new template created by the guys at Blogger. They JUST released a preview/prototype of five new templates that they will be releasing in the future. Right now they are un-editable, but in the future they will be. Of the five, my favorites for potential usage for us is the sidebar view and the timeline view. You can see all the views by going to http://www.reachingperfection.com/view and selecting which view to use in the top right. Like I said... the features of the sidebar and timeline are the best, but the both lack the space in the sidebar that I use for following/pageviews/comments and it lacks the header/menu image. They may come out with them when they are fully released... we shall see. Here is their little trailer of the new views... most of them being "photo" focused:

      Site positions

As I said I am starting to delegate some of the stuff that I take care of. One of the positions that I am currently looking at is a position to be an admin of the forums. If you aren't actually part of the forums then you probably won't get the position. Right now I have two guys in mind; you can read all about it in the "Forum Admin Position" announcement in the forums. As for other positions I am looking at increasing the number of authors here still. I haven't really heard from Noklu/IKIR in a bit, but Jonzorz has been busy trying to write up something to start up some Base Design discussion. And many have nominated Mythic Fritz as the guy that should cover the RP favorites. I'm sort of debating between that right now. It would be nice to have a designated person for it, but I probably won't restrict that ability for all other authors so basically Jon and Noklu could write up RP favorites as well. That's all for now... well before I leave I want to introduce you guys to one of my favorite indie studios: Ska Studios. They are the guys that made I made a game with zombies in it, ZP2K9/X, and Dishwasher Samurai. James started the group and is living the dream of an Indie Developer. Great work so far James. Maybe one day I can work with him or be like him and run my own crew. ;) Laterz for now.

I don't know about the new layouts in the link. I hate to be the "NO CHANGE!" guy, but the current "blocky" layout is easy to navigate, and easy to read. I'm not opposed to new layouts, but those seem too complicated. As for a spot in the current layout for ads, top of the sidebar would probably be good. Would love to see some pics though.

I sent something to you via skype, but we both have to online for it to send, so yeah. And, what's more all my exams are over and I'm off school after next week!

I'm glad to see so much action taken into improving RP. And I'm really interested in seeing someone take over RP Favorites. It's an area of the site I've been waiting to see some updates in. Whether or not I'm the person for the job will depend on what Godly's future intentions for the section are I guess. I'm not sure if it's the perfect fit for me, but I really like the group here at RP and I'd love to help better the community in that way, it would be lots of fun. So lets chat Godly, what's your preferred method of comm?

Whatever we do with the site design, I must ask that you choose a mobile/android compatible layout, as this is my primary method of visiting the site.

The current layout works perfectly with my phone browser, but I don't know about any of those newer ones.

First off, change is good. I'm excited to see this site get an overhaul because it could definitely use it. Mobile friendly is definitely a must as it is one o my primary means of site use on y iPhone. As for RP favorites, yes yes and more yes! I've been dying for that area of the site to get some more activity. Especially since Vistage is apart of it ;) no but seriously, there are so many fantastic maps out there right now that deserve attention so let's get them out in the open!

As for layout design for the website I think the bar across the top with the sections is good but it would definitely be nice to see side sections that show the latest updates for RP favorites, forge lessons, additional writers posts, etc. We need the newcomers to be able to see that there is activity in the site with posts and favorites and the forums. Is there a way a way for Cobb to build some kind of widget type thing that would allow people to see what members are online at the current moment? This way when test sessions are running people on the site could see and then hop in.

Idk, these are just some rough ideas off of the top of my head but yeah. This site definitely needs more activity but we won't get the activity if there is nothing going on.
