1. On the "Brink" of distraction

      written by Ray Benefield
Alright so today is a post not related to Halo. BUT I HIGHLY recommend you read this because this is something you will want to see trust me. Before I dive into this "Brink" thing, I want to publicly congratulate Randy 355 on getting Cyberdyne noticed over at Forgehub. So let's talk about Brink... which releases May 10th. Next tuesday, basically. Brink will be my distraction from Halo forging. ;)

      The movement system

So the basics of Brink is that it is a class based, team centric shooter that features parkour/free running movement similar to Mirror's Edge. It is like Mirror's Edge mixed with Team Fortress 2. First I will start you off with some videos that talk about the free running system that they call SMART; Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain. The first video talks about the basics of it. The second video does a little demonstration, showing how it is used to move around a map.

      How the gameplay works

So as I said this game is class based and very team centric. If you are just looking for a game to kill people then this may not be your cup of tea. Gameplay is extremely objective based and objectives are extremely dynamic. You always have a primary objective, but you can do any secondary objectives to help your team in various ways. These objectives are all based on not only your class, but also the scenario, what the other team is doing, and other things. For example, if I'm an engineer I can get an objective to build a wall to block off the path of a maintenance bot. Once I am done building that wall, the other team's soldiers could get an objective to destroy that wall so their maintenance bot can continue on. The following videos will run you through most of the game's mechanics. This series is just recently released to give off info for the game a week or two before release so these are all from the final game.

      What sets Brink apart

So what makes Brink different than most first person shooters? First of all the movement system will add a huge dynamic to combat allowing you to use your environment to its fullest potential. Second of all Brink is all about working as a team to complete an objective. One main thing that Brink is doing is not having kills or deaths be visible as a stat. This will stop those who typically enjoy stat whoring and basically force people to play the objective or loose. Also there is 8 man co-op... I mean that is pretty freaking crazy. Another cool thing is that the developers can patch all of the weapons, abilities, and what not without having to go through a title update. Meaning that they can balance a weapon the next day if it is proving to be too overpowered. Brink is basically Halo's Invasion gametype taken to an extreme level. I'm going to stop typing now. Below is a demonstration of how the game is played that was done at PAX. The gameplay in the video below is a little outdated, but it really gives you a good feel to how the game is played. Laterz peepz...

It does look fantastic. I have only one major concern. It's a problem which seems to find its way into every contemporary FPS other than the Halo series and it's beginning to really annoy me: Why do they cover the bottom half of the screen with your weapon when you're using the sights? I just don't understand how this could possibly be thought of as a good idea. I assume it's supposed to be 'realistic'. But we know that realism does not necessarily equal good gameplay. When you zoom in with any weapon in Halo, your weapon disappears off the screen, allowing you full view of the area surrounding your cross-hairs. Why can't the creators of all the other FPS games just do this? Having said all that, I'll still probably be getting this. :)

Thanks Godly! Also, Brink does look pretty bitchin'. I watched a few of those vids and I've gotta say, that smart function look groundbreaking! I may have to pick that up, so as to collaborate to an RP team.

Darn it! I'm out of money! I guess I will wait few weeks or a month before buying this, if at all.

When does this come out? It looks fun, even if the graphics seem very team-fortress-y

Its nice to see that I'm not the only one who has had an eye on Brink for a while. I've had the pleasure of playing Brink already for an hour at Pax East and I have to say it was incredibly fun and the map I played on was very well designed and all the missions within the match seemed tailored to fit the map. I can't wait to be playing it in two days.
