1. Forerunner Château - 6/26/2011

      written by Ray Benefield
I've been meaning to post the past couple of days, I swear. :P lol... before I get on to today's post I wanted to direct you guys towards a post by MrGreenWithAGun called Forging the Forerunner. He talks about how Affinity inspired him to look into using the forge pieces as what they were intended to be used as rather than forcing them to work in ways that they weren't really intended. It is a pretty good read. Now on to my latest project. A full make over of Château. Btw, let me know what you think about this post length and screenshot wise. Do you like this amount of content in your posts or would you like me to go back to the short and sweet posts?

      What's going down

I've been wanting to post my progress on my project of making Château in sketchup with more of a forerunner feel. I've done the playtesting on the map and I love how it plays. Now my goal is to re-design it with my own custom touches without the restriction of forge. I'm modeling my own architecture with inspiration of forerunner structures throughout the Halo series. I'm not a very artistic guy and have never done 3D modeling before so this is a new venture for me. I'm starting with just the models and maybe later I will delve into texturing and what not. Who knows, I may eventually transfer this to the UDK or Halo: Custom Edition. I'm doing this to add more than just forge experience to my design portfolio.

      A Door to the future

My first attempts [Click to enlarge]

So on my last post I showed a little bit of what I started working on (pictured above). Well it was just something basic and it got me a little comfortable with working on sketchup as a modeling tool. I've only used it in the past as a pseudo level editor when several people made forge objects for use in sketchup for planning out your map so the actual modeling of a component is new for me. The door that I have in that screenshot is very simple and I could definitely make it more intricate and forerunner-ish. It was modeled based on the simplicity of the door to the red base on Beaver Creek in Halo 2. Well since Halo 2 things have gotten more fancy and purty. So I went to Halo 3 and found me a door that looked pretty awesome and was featured in both Epitaph and Guardian. Below you will see my reference screenshot as well as the old door next to the new one.

Fancy, eh? As usual click to enlarge.

Much, much better... but could use some tweaking in the future.

      Windows, a work in progress

On the far left you will see a window on top of a door.

So now I'm pretty happy with the door. In the future I'll probably make some fine tuning tweaks to it, but the general shape is good to go for now. Now with the door comes the window. Château has one particular instance where a door is directly underneath a window. You can see it in the above screenshot on the far left. It is a little cut off, but you get the idea. Sure it doesn't flow together perfectly well, but now that I'm modeling my own architecture, I can do something that can make it flow together much better. So, also on Epitaph, there is a good example of the door that I created paired with a window (which you will see below). The problem though is that the window has open edges where the top and bottom of the window don't really touch each other, and I don't think that will look good between two pillars. So I want to do something similar, but different. A sort of mix between the two.

A forerunner window/door stacked for reference

Three window styles I came up with.
If you touch it, it gets bigger. ;) lol...

So pictured above is the three window styles I came up with. They look fine and dandy. The second one was sort of off proportioned so the third one is sort of a re-proportioned version of it. Btw, the tops of all of the windows are the same as the door because I want to make sure that when everything is put together that portion is sticking up in between each pillar regardless of whether there is a door or a window there for consistency purposes. Now I like the style of the first one, however it doesn't pair as well with the door. The second and third were made to make a better look for when they are stacked on top of each other. Here is a screenshot of the first and third window stacked on top of the door between two pillars. And that is where I am at now.

I like the one on the right, as it feels a lot more forerunner.

      Moving forward

Alright so I sort of have a window design together. The next thing to do is to create a good pillar that I can work with. I'm thinking something similar to the walkway cover pillars that I have on Château, but not quite. I also realized later that I need to create a bridge from window to window for the top center bridge in Château. So I will probably have to work with the window a little bit to find a good way to make a good forerunner bridge. A couple of people in the skype chat suggested doing an energy bridge, so I will probably try that with a cover over it. Below are some examples of the energy bridge in action. I think I'm going to go with the Narrows style (the last picture) with the railings and a forerunner bridge cover for tossing grenades from the bottom level. I'm out for now folks... phew! That was a long post. Laterz peepz.

This one is feasible, but I think I want forerunner railings.

Not really a fan of this one, but it is nice for reference.

I like this one because of the railings.

Really liking the ideas here. Good post too; I'm liking the extended content. You could get away with even more in future bro.

Slightly off-topic; I've personally spent quite considerable time in Forge attempting to perfectly recreate the pillars found in The Silent Cartographer (CE level). It is possible, but it ends up eating your budget in half before you even think about anything else (using bunkers from the buildings menu as 'feet' for the pillars).

This is really neat Godly. It would actually be really cool if doing this you incorporated it into Halo PC and gave it a spin on there. I would love to play a visually unique Chateau on Halo PC.

      Godly,

Keep up your research. Your products do feel grounded in the universe we all know and admire.

While most of our adventures with forerunners have offered horizontal
traversing, forerunners do not build to the needs of only those with two
legs. You might consider that spaces created with forerunner architecture accommodate not only those affected by vertical gravity, but also those that move in three dimensions about a space.

Geometry within your designs must address that advanced level of design.

Length of the post is fine. I do (as you may know) prefer the step by step process being discussed with progressive media. So keep that in. The more processes that you highlight along with your designs, the more we can appreciate where you are because of where you started.

Very interested in seeing more. This will keep me coming back. Among other things.

      Stay determined!
